REALLY LAST POST

Resultado de imagen de electricity
Hi! During the last few weeks we have been working with electricity, which is the force of moving electrons, and right now I will explain you some things that I learnt during this final term, my last term in technology.

First of all we are going to talk about the different ways to produce electrical energy. Like you should know these ways of producing energy are divided into nonrenewable and renewable ones, which are the ones that will last forever. Into the first group we can found nuclear energy, natural gas, oil and coal, between others. Nowadays the more used one is coal, but oil is nuclear energy is gaining power too (see graphic below). All of them are destroying our planet by the greenhouse effect, killing flora and fauna... For this reason, I think the best way of producing energy is throw renewable energy.

Renewable energy is the one that use natural resources to obtain energy. Inside this ecologic group we can find Tidal, Biomass, Geothermal, Solar, Wind and Hydraulic energy, all of them produced in different ways. The key is that in all this different methods, nonrenewable and renewable something is moving. Here I led you a video where all this information is well explained and detailed.

solar power
Nowadays there's a lot of innovations to do energy greener, one that cached my attention while I was searching information about this post was that some investigators are developing fuel cell technologies which will led us to transport vehicles only using oxygen and hydrogen and only releasing water and heat.  Another new which I have been interested in is Solar panels located in the space which sent the energy again to the Earth.

During this term we have also been working with electricity bill, so I have seen how we can make it smaller every month. The more obvious one is to change all our bulbs into leds, which consume only 5 W comparing to the normal bulbs which consume, mines of course every bulb is different, over than 220 W. If you have already done that you can also use this other tip: programe your water heater to be only be working when you use it, it seems difficult but is not and you will safe a lot of energy because is the electric device that more consume of the whole house.

A fun idea that you can also take is to make a solar oven. What's that? Well is simply  a insulated box which take all the heat of the sun and make your food. We did it and of course we had some problems, but when we found a good page where all was good explained it was so easy. We did it only with some carboard, plastic, black painting, glue and, finally, aluminium foil.

Now let's talk about technology, but in this case about the subject. Like you noticed during this year I have been doing this subject in English thanks to the British programe, and I really learnt a lot and we have been working with programes like kahoot, scratch, webnode, crocodile...

I think the thing I have enjoyed more are the Kahoots and maybe do the web page, however I also enjoyed the workshop unless the practic part. I think Kahoot is the programe I enjoyed more, in fact. In the other hand I didn't like the written project and of course the theoretic part, and personally the electric bill either. I think a thing that we have to improve is to do more work in the computer's room and bring the material to the workshop, but the teachers must change some things too, for example led us to bring our projects at home to finish them.

With all of that I want to finish this two years with this subject because next year I won't do it. Good bye everyone, good bye technology...

Rosa

TRY ENGINERING!

Hi! How are you? The last day two students of the UIB (University of the Balearic Islands) which are studying engineering came to our high school to introduce us in the world of engineering by doing a project.

Maybe some of you don't know what really means be an engineer, so the dictionary say that an engineer is "a person trained and skilled in the design, construction, and use of engines or machines, or in any of various branches of engineering : a mechanical engineer; a civil engineer...". Maybe this definition is so complex, well an engineer is someone who fins a solution to a problem using the engineering.

During this project we worked in groups with the goal of build an estructure in teams. In my case my experience with my group was great, I felt confortable with my team and we worked together, in the way that everyone had a task but we helped each other. Of course every member worked and we tried to give the better of our self's!

Although we worked as a really team we didn't achieved our goal (make an estructure which purpose was to raise some centimeters a bag of tea through wind energy.) I think our problem was that we tried so different things and at the end we didn't have time because we changed the project so many times. If we had followed our first idea (do the blades with spoons and then redirige the wind) maybe it would have worked. We could improve it changing the shape of the blades because the movement that raised the bag of tea worked.

I think we worked like engineers because we searched the problem and we tried to solve it with the materials we had, but I feel so stress and without in off time. Definitely I won't be an engineer!

At the end of the project I enjoyed the activity and I will repeat it if i have the opportunity.

That's all for today, see you in the next post!

PLASTICS IN THE OCEAN AND BOYAN SLAT

Hi! Like I had already told to you, we are working with plastics right now and during this week we have been studying the Bowan Slat's story ans it's relation with the oceans' plastics.

First of all I will explain to you how big is the problem of plastics in our oceans and seas nowadays.

Resultado de imagen de contaminacion oceanos
Plastic is a lasting material and nowadays our oceans have more than 150 tones aggregated  of it. Plastic is already in our fish, one of our principal food and it's the causant of the 70% of the oceans'pollution. Anyone is doing nothing to stop it, anyone except Bowan Slat and his colleges.

But, who is this boy? Bowan Slat is a 22 dutch boy, that tanks to a crowdfuding raised money to do his special project. Nowadays he's the founder and CEO of the oceans' cleanup and he has won a lot of  awards and is considered one of the young men with more future.

Resultado de imagen de boyan slatHe started with his project when he was 15 years old and he has been  perfecting it since then.
It's not a very complicated project, but is so interesting see how does it works, how this young men has found a solution of this global problem. Bowan has designed passive cleanup units which are designed to capture virtually any type of debris. Models show that by utilising vast rotational ocean currents, cleanup systems with a combined span of 100 km can harvest almost half the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in 10 years.
I will let you here the explanation of the project made by the official web page of the Slat's business:

I think that is young man has have a very good idea, and I'm agree with him in the way that we must save our oceans. Right now I can not think in a better idea but I think that to perfect this one we have to thing in a way to do all of this without polluting with CO2, especially with the boats that have been used.
If you want to help this organisation you can donate money in their official page!

If you want more information you can see this video or visit the following web pages, where I have took all the information:

MEHANISMS!

Hi! This weeks we have been working in mechanisms  at the TECHNOLOGY classes, and now  I will explain all my knowledge about this first unit.

I have decided to do it in a kind of squeme to make it more visual and easy to study.

Resultado de imagen de mecanismos      MECHANISMS:  The mechanisms are simply objects that take a concrete force or motion to transform it to a different force or motion.

The mechanisms are used to make easier a job.

There are so different types of mechanisms, this are the more used in the mechanisms systems:

  • GEARS: are wheels with teeth that can either increase the speed of a machine or its force, but not both at the same time. We use them to increase the force, to increase the speed or to change the direction.   Ex: a bicycle

  • .Resultado de imagen de bike mechanism
  •  There are different types of gears depending the use (rotary, speed...)

      • Gears Trains (Rotary motion)
      • Rack and Pinion (Type of motion)
      • Bevel Gears (Direction of motion)

      • CAMS: A cam is a shaped piece of metal or plastic fixed to a rotating shaft. It have different parts:
Resultado de imagen de cam mechanism
      EXAMPLE
And there are different types of cams:

        • Circular cam
        • Pear cam
        • Snail cam
        • Four-lobed cam.

      • PULLEYS: Pulleys are used to change the speed, direction of rotation, or turning force or torque. A pulley system consists of two pulley wheels each on a shaft, connected by a belt.

A pulley system with one 40mm diameter pulley and a 120mm pulley, connected by a belt. The smaller pulley is rotating at 100rpm
If the pulley wheels are different sizes, the smaller one will spin faster than the larger one. The difference in speed is called the velocity ratio.

MACHINES: Are objects that make it easier to people to do a work.
This are the six main types of simple machines:

Resultado de imagen de simple machines
      • LEVERS: It is the simplest machine of all. It is a simply bar that helps us to exert a bigger force when you turn it.

Like you can see in the image below it is divided into three main parts: the fulcrum, the effort             and the load
      Physics of a seesaw
              Different types of levers:

        • Class-1 levers: Is when the force you apply is in the opposite side of the fulcrum of the force you produce. Ex: sccisors
        •  Physics of a class-1 lever (scissors)
        • Class-2 levers: This type of lever is putted in an other way: with the fulcrum at the end, the force you produce at the middle and the force you apply at the beggining.                Ex: wheelbarrow. Physics of a class-2 level (wheelbarrow)
        • Class-3 levers: It is different again, in this case we found the fulcrum ata the end and the two forces switch around. Ex: tongs
        •  Physics of a class-3 lever (tongs)

      • INCLINED PLANE : An inclined plane is a ramp that assists moving an object up and down heights. This is a plane surface, set at an angle against a orizontal surface.

Resultado de imagen de inclined plane
It works because the greater the distance the smaller the force applied. EX: stairs.

Resultado de imagen de inclined plane examples

      • SCREW: It is a machine that converts rational movement into linear movement. The  closer and wider the thereda are (the main part of a screw) stronger will be the hold. It is use to:
        • Drill holes
        • Hold things together
        • Lift heavy objects.
EX: bulbResultado de imagen de screwResultado de imagen de bulb

      • PULLEY: A basic pulley comprises of a wheel on a fixed axle, with a groove along the edges to guide a rope. Each time the rope wraps around the wheels, you create more lifting power or mechanical advantage. EX: Crane
      • Resultado de imagen de pulleys
Resultado de imagen de pulleys EXAMPLE
      • WHEEL AND AXEL: Is a simple machine used to move heavy objects in an easiest way. In this simple machine, a wheel is locked to a central axle and they rotate each other when a force is applied on  either one of them. Is one of the more used machines.  EX: wheelResultado de imagen de wheel and axle How a wheel multiplies speed or force.

      • WEDGE: A wedge is made up of two inclined planes, that meet and form a sharp edge. They don't work without movement. EX: knife, saw...
      • Resultado de imagen de wedgeResultado de imagen de wedge
      TRANSMISSION OF MOVEMENT:

    • Rotary motion is turning round in a circle, such as a wheel turning.

      • Linear motion is moving in a straight line, such as on a paper trimmer.
      • Reciprocating motion is moving backwards and forwards in a straight line, as in cutting with a saw.
      • Oscillating motion is swinging from side to side, like a pendulum in a clock.

Here you have a mindmap of all the unit:

Personal interests: like I had said in other posts I love dance, and I constantly use gears (the ones that are inside the music tower) and wheels and axels (the ones that are used to move the bar).
